Block erosion, reclaim your slope, and add functional seating — walls engineered for Illinois freeze–thaw cycles.
Let’s build something amazing
Many Chicagoland homeowners deal with sloped backyards that erode every season, flood during rain, and can’t be used for entertaining. Without a properly engineered retaining wall, the problem compounds — soil shifts, patios crack, and valuable yard space stays unusable year after year.
H&M Gardening has been designing and building retaining walls and seating walls across Chicagoland since 1995. We engineer every wall for Illinois freeze–thaw cycles with proper drainage, compacted base prep, and geogrid reinforcement where needed — so your wall holds for decades, not just a few seasons. When we add integrated seating walls, your patio gains functional borders that actually become part of how you use the space.
H&M Gardening handles complete retaining and seating wall installations — from single-run garden borders to multi-tiered slope systems with integrated steps, patio, and landscape.
The most common retaining wall type in Chicagoland, built with Unilock, Techo-Bloc, or Allan Block for a clean, durable look on any slope.
Fieldstone, limestone, and large boulder walls that blend naturally into the landscape and handle heavy erosion zones with a timeless look.
Multi-level retaining systems that convert steep, unusable slopes into flat terraces for patios, gardens, or play areas.
Low walls 18–24 inches tall with flat or bullnose caps that define your patio edge and provide built-in seating around fire pits and gathering areas.
Wall systems with built-in steps for navigating grade changes between yard levels cleanly, safely, and without extra structures.
Smaller retaining walls for raised garden beds, landscape borders, and decorative planting areas throughout your property.
We build retaining and seating walls with no shortcuts on base prep, drainage, or materials. Every wall is engineered for the specific slope, soil, and load conditions of your yard.
A retaining wall is a structural element, not just a landscape feature. H&M Gardening brings 30+ years of experience building walls that hold against Illinois soil pressure, frost heave, and heavy drainage loads. We use premium materials from Unilock, Techo-Bloc, and Allan Block, installed with the correct base depth, drainage, and geogrid to meet real-world demands in Chicagoland weather. Our family-owned team is on every project from layout to final cap.

Most retaining wall projects range from $8,000 to $15,000 for standard slope lengths. Larger tiered systems or walls over 4 feet with integrated seating walls and steps typically range from $20,000 to $50,000+, depending on length, height, and materials.
We work with Unilock, Techo-Bloc, and Allan Block segmental retaining wall systems, as well as natural stone and large boulder walls. Material choice depends on wall height, soil conditions, and the look you want to achieve.
Walls under 4 feet typically do not require a permit, though this varies by municipality. Walls over 4 feet require geogrid reinforcement and usually need a permit. We handle permit coordination for every applicable project.
Water pressure behind a wall is one of the main causes of wall failure. Every wall we build includes perforated drainage pipe and crushed stone backfill to relieve that pressure and direct water away from the wall base.
If your yard has erosion, drainage problems, or an unusable slope, we can fix it with a properly engineered retaining wall. Share your project details and we will give you clear guidance on the right solution and investment.
