Let’s build something amazing
Many homeowners deal with cracked concrete, settling pavers, or driveways that buckle after a single hard winter. The problem is almost always the same: poor base preparation and no drainage planning. Without a properly compacted crushed limestone base and engineered slope, even premium pavers will shift, sink, and crack within a few seasons.
As a leading paver contractor in Chicagoland, H&M Gardening specializes in complete design-build installations for patios, walkways, and driveways. Every project starts with a proper site assessment, engineered base system, and drainage plan built to survive decades of Illinois freeze–thaw cycles. We use premium Unilock and Techo-Bloc pavers and handle everything from excavation to final jointing, so your investment looks great and performs long-term.

Most paver patios start around $15,000–$25,000 for a properly installed 300–500 sq ft area. Walkways and front entries typically range from $8,000–$15,000 depending on length and design. Full paver driveways start around $20,000–$30,000 for a standard two-car driveway, with larger or more complex projects running $40,000+. The biggest cost drivers are size, site conditions, and base preparation requirements.
A properly installed paver system with an engineered compacted base and correct drainage should last 30+ years in Chicagoland’s freeze–thaw climate. This applies to patios, walkways, and driveways equally. The key factors are excavation depth, base compaction, proper slope, and quality edge restraints. Pavers that shift or crack are almost always installed on an inadequate base, not a material failure.
Pavers are individual units that flex with freeze–thaw movement without cracking and can be individually replaced if damaged. Stamped concrete is poured as one slab that cracks under freeze–thaw stress, cannot be repaired cleanly, and fades within 5–10 years. Pavers cost more initially but deliver significantly longer performance and lower long-term maintenance cost in Illinois weather.
Most paver patios take 1–2 weeks from excavation to final cleanup. Walkways and front entries are typically completed in 3–5 days. Driveways may take 2–3 weeks depending on size. Larger projects with complex grading, drainage work, or multi-level designs can take 3–4 weeks. We schedule projects weeks to months in advance during peak season.
Sealing is optional. Premium pavers from Unilock and Techo-Bloc include built-in color and surface technology and do not require sealing for structural performance. Sealing enhances color vibrancy and makes cleaning easier, but adds maintenance cost every 2–3 years. We provide specific guidance based on your pavers and project type at completion.
Yes. Replacing failing concrete with pavers is one of our most common projects. We remove the existing concrete, excavate to the proper depth, install the engineered base, and lay your new paver system. In some cases where existing concrete is level and stable, pavers can be overlaid, but full replacement typically delivers better long-term drainage and performance.
Paver installations are low-maintenance. Annual tasks include sweeping, occasional power washing, and reapplying polymeric sand in joints every 3–5 years as needed. For driveways, avoid heavy vehicle fluid spills which can stain pavers over time. Use plastic shovels for snow removal and avoid de-icing salts, which can damage paver surfaces.
Every installation must slope away from your home at a minimum 2% grade. We assess your property’s natural drainage, engineer proper slope during excavation, and integrate swales, catch basins, or drainage pipes where site conditions require it. Drainage planning is built into every patio, walkway, and driveway project from the beginning.
Most paver patios and walkways do not require permits. Driveway replacements and projects near a public right-of-way may require permits depending on your suburb. We are experienced with local codes across Chicagoland and handle the permit process as part of your project scope when required.
Paver driveways cost more upfront than asphalt or stamped concrete but last significantly longer and can be repaired section by section rather than replaced entirely. They handle Illinois freeze–thaw cycles without cracking, add meaningful curb appeal and property value, and offer design flexibility that concrete and asphalt cannot match.
We can install pavers into late fall as long as the ground is not frozen and temperatures stay above freezing during installation. Winter installation is not recommended because frozen ground prevents proper excavation and base compaction. Spring and summer are ideal, with fall installations typically possible through October and November depending on weather.
